Player agents in the NFL are regulated by the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). An agent has to pass rigorous requirements to become an NFLPA-certified agent. Below are the basic requirements imposed by NFLPA for would-be certified agents. All applicants must:

1. Hold an undergraduate and a postgraduate degree from a college or university accredited by the NFLPA. NFLPA-accredited colleges and universities are those that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or the Office of Degree Authorization (ODA). Exceptions are made for those with seven years of relevant negotiating experience.

2. Authorize the NFLPA to conduct a background investigation.

3. Attend the New Agent seminar. The New Agent seminar, along with its exam, is administered only once each year.

4. Successfully pass the proctored, written multiple choice exam.

5. Pay the non-refundable application fee of $2,500.

6. Provide a valid email address.
